Position Description: Associate Executive Director of Assessments

Position Summary
The Associate Executive Director for Assessments is a key member of the leadership team of the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS). This role is responsible for directing and overseeing the development, quality, and delivery of all ABOHNS written examinations, including initial certification, subspecialty certification, continuing certification, and in‑training assessments. The Associate Executive Director collaborates closely with ABOHNS staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and consultants to ensure high quality examinations that adhere to best practices in assessment science are delivered.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide training, guidance and oversight to content developers and subject matter experts.
- Manage and continually refine the item development and maintenance processes.
- Develop and implement strategies and tools to optimize item quality, workflow efficiency, and content accuracy.
- Identify and communicate high-priority areas of content development.
- Direct exam form construction for the Otolaryngology Training Exam, Written Exam, subspecialty exams, and CertLink.
- Ensure rigorous quality assurance and quality control of items and exam forms.
- Review and update item writing guidelines, at least annually.
- Foster strong working relationships with item writers, subject matter experts, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Participate in administrative and operational activities to support ABOHNS programs and initiatives.
Qualifications
- Diplomate of the ABOHNS in good standing
- History of volunteer service to the ABOHNS, ideally including experience with the Task Force for New Materials or service as an Oral Examiner, Exam Council Member, or Director
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to execute projects effectively and independently
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and comfortable presenting to large groups
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to foster collaboration
- Adept problem solving skills with sound judgment and decision making capabilities
- Ability to effectively prioritize time amongst competing demands and consistently meet deadlines
- Mathematical aptitude and familiarity with psychometrics
- Willingness to participate in evening videoconference meetings as needed
- Availability to attend two Board of Directors meetings and one Exam Retreat annually
Work Hours
- Average 24 hours per week (0.6 FTE)
Work Location
- Remote with travel required for specified meetings
